Cart Upsell Pairing Setup Guide

A cart upsell should help the customer complete a purchase they already intend to make. This tutorial pairs a main item with a relevant accessory and records the reason. Use BlueCart cart drawer recommendations to present suitable products, then check each recommended variant before publishing.

Try the storefront example

Inspect the pen refill card and select View refill to see its sample product path. This example uses a specific product recommendation.

Storefront example

This example uses BlueCart storefront code with sample data and the settings below. Your theme’s fonts and available width can change the result. Example links show their destination; purchase controls use a sample cart. Use the checks below to confirm the finished setup in your store.

Build it in BlueCart

  1. Open BlueCart and create a cart upsell campaign. Give it a name that identifies the offer.
  2. Choose specific products as the recommendation source. Select the matching refill for your test pen. Set the title to Complete your pen order and the action to View product, labelled View refill.
  3. Use one card per view, one row, and a minimum slide width of 260 px. Turn off the quantity selector for this product-link example.
  4. Save and publish the campaign. Enable the BlueCart app embed in your theme. Add the BlueCart app block at the intended location and select this campaign. For a custom placement, use the campaign’s generated shortcode.

For a custom BlueCart placement, replace YOUR_CAMPAIGN_ID with the ID from your saved campaign. Keep the app embed enabled.

How do I choose a useful accessory for a cart upsell?

A low-priced item is not automatically a useful recommendation. Start with a documented relationship, such as an accessory made for the selected model. The reward gap can help choose among suitable items, but it should not override fit, stock, or the customer’s actual task.

  1. List accessory relationships that your team can verify. Remove recommendations that depend only on a similar product title.
  2. Check whether the accessory is already included in the main item or another cart line.
  3. In BlueCart, choose a Specific products upsell for a controlled accessory list, or a Related or Complementary source for Shopify recommendations. Verify the result and configure suitable backup products.
  4. Test a cart below a reward goal and confirm that adding the accessory produces the expected cart total and eligible reward state.

Read the BlueCart setup guide for the full app controls and placement options.

Check the finished setup

  • Mark a suggested variant unavailable in a preview scenario and inspect how the recommendation behaves.
  • Add the accessory from the drawer and confirm the intended variant and quantity reach the cart.
  • Remove the main item and check whether the remaining recommendation still makes sense.

Common mistakes

  • Do not present accessory compatibility as proven by a related-products recommendation.
  • Do not claim an upsell improves revenue without measuring the actual store outcome.

Supported use

These examples cover progress messages and cart recommendations. A displayed milestone does not prove that checkout grants a reward. Confirm the actual shipping rate or discount with a test order, including cart changes and competing discounts. Sample amounts are teaching examples, not recommended thresholds or revenue forecasts.

BlueCart features, current app plans, and BlueCart recommendation sources and fallback products explain the supported setup.
